OUAT’s ‘The Jolly Roger’ was directed by Ernest Dickerson. Writer was David H. Goodman.
In FTL the lost year, Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) has been demoted from a dashing sea faring pirate to lowly highwayman. He does it mainly to keep himself and his crew occupied. But his heart really isn’t into it. All he can think about is returning to StoryBrooke for Emma (Jennifer Morrison).
Ariel (Joanna García Swisher) has bone to pick with him. She thinks he kidnapped Prince Eric (Gil McKinney) and she wants him back. Hook lost his ship and now he knows who has it. Blackbeard (Charles Mesure) is the most feared pirate ever to sail the seas. Smee (Christopher Gauthier) trips over his words trying to talk him out of the raid.
Hook is obsessed with resuming his former life. Nothing will change his mind. Ariel gave valuable information and she’s entitled to be compensated in equal favor. She forces him to take her along as payment. She also angers him by bringing up his adventures with Snowing. Hook doesn’t want anyone to think he’s gone soft. He threatens her to stay quiet.
In SB, Emma wants to take the fight to Zelena (Rebecca Mader). To prove she’s serious she asks Regina (Lana Parrilla) to train her how to use magic. The EQ takes that challenge. Ariel comes ashore looking for Hook. Her prince is missing, she’s spent the past year looking and she thinks he knows where he is. Hook lies and says he has no idea what she’s talking about.
Hook however is drafted despite his objections. She and the pirate visit Belle (Emilie de Ravin) at Rumple’s (Robert Carlyle) shop. They find Eric’s cloak and Belle finds a GPS location potion to use. Pouring it on the garment leads her to her love.
Henry (Jared S. Gilmore) needs a babysitter since Emma and Regina are otherwise occupied. Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Charming (Josh Dallas) quickly volunteer. They can’t stand the idea that Henry prefers Hook over them.
The good: Meow! Love POTC Captain Jack version of Blackbeard. Not enough Blackbeard. More Charles Mesure please. Want to see Rumple and Blackbeard team up against their common enemy. Hook looking like an extra from John Boorman’s Excalibur.
Snowing righteous indignation over Henry thinking Hook is more fun. Grandpa Charming teaches Henry to drive. Mailboxes pay the price. Loved Snow’s reaction during all the chaos. Ariel and Belle BFF. Regina takes after Rumple as a teacher and practices tough love.
Best lines: I turned from the person I used to be and it didn’t work. I’ve been under the sea searching. We’re not making tapas we’re making magic. You’re going to pretend no-one sees the yearning and doughy eyes. If mending a cloak is our biggest obstacle then we’re in fine shape. Fancy a shave do we? I can either make this painful or quite painful.
The bad: Charming & Emma defeated by a baby crib.
The ugly: The hook er twist at the end.
