Hannibal’s ‘Entrée’ was directed by Michael Rymer. Writers were Kai Yu Wu and Bryan Fuller.

Dr. Abel Gideon (Eddie Izzard) is a resident of the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He has knocked himself unconscious. Guards check for a pulse, cuff him to a gurney then rush to infirmary. Nurse Shell (Ana Shepherd) attends to her patient. She hooks him up to various monitoring equipment. He’s out and secure. Guards stand outside the door. Why could possibly go wrong?

Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) takes Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) to meet Dr. Frederick Chilton (Raúl Esparza). The administrator is salivating. Will is on the academia hit list. The man is a walking case study of psychological and personality disorders. Everyone wants to publish a paper on him.

Fredricka “Freddie” Lounds (Lara Jean Chorostecki) latest exclusive caught Jack’s attention. She revealed why the Chesapeake Ripper has been off the grid. Chilton had him in his facility. Chilton enjoyed his pet project then Gideon killed his nurse. Time to let the cat out of the bag. Announce his findings to the world and gloat.

Jack and Will are there to confirm or deny Lounds’ story. The manner of Nurse Shell’s death was seen only once before. It was the last murder by the Chesapeake Ripper. Two years ago, Jack calls trainee Miriam Lass (Anna Chlumsky) to his office. She’s smart and ambitious. He gives her the opportunity to catch the Ripper as the newest member of his task force. Lass will be his profiler.

Will takes Dr. Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas) with him for round two. Alana has had contact with Gideon before. Jack tells Will they withheld details about the wound patterns. Beverly Katz (Hettienne Park), Brian Zeller (Aaron Abrams) and Jimmy Price (Scott Thompson) confirm everything is an exact match.

Gideon is either him or a copycat. Will is worried how the real Ripper will respond to someone taking credit for his work. They don’t have to wait long. Jack gets a late night call that makes his hair stand up. It’s from the previously missing and presumed dead Miriam Lass. The Ripper has her and she’s scared out of her mind.

Jack utilizes Lounds to officially confirm Gideon is the Chesapeake Ripper to see what happens.

The good: More Raúl Esparza and Eddie Izzard please. There are plenty of words to describe Rafael Barba. None of them are nice. But at least he has morals. Dr. Frederick Chilton is a bottom feeder. He exploits his patients to make a name for himself. Eddie Izzard brought his laser edged wit and trademark snark to the table. What a joy to see them battle it out with the cast.

Want more episodes depicting the initial emergence of the Ripper. Show Lass searching for clues. Lecter working as an ER attending physician.

The bad: Hannibal was a wild animal in the beginning. The murder of Olmstead proved that. What rudeness provoked such violence?

The ugly: The Goldilocks and the Three Bears joke.
