‘From Beyond’ is the 1986 film directed by Stuart Gordon. Screenwriters were Stuart Gordon, Brian Yunza and Dennis Paoli. Based on the novel by H.P. Lovecraft. Starring Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Ted Sorel & Ken Foree.

Dr. Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel) is conducting field experiments with the Resonator. His invention that allows people to see and interact with terrifying creatures from another dimension. Dr. Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs) was Pretorius’ long suffering assistant.

The device emitted a frequency that stimulated the pineal gland. The pineal gland produces the hormone melatonin. Causing some men sexual dysfunction and decreased libido. It may have also produced serotonin. Causing a feeling of well-being and happiness. This may explain why Pretorius was obsessed with the Resonator.

He felt great within its proximity. Then an addictive serotonergic psychedelic effect due to increased exposure. Offset by withdrawal symptoms. Tillinghast is attacked by a creature. When Pretorius refuses to turn it off, Tillinghast grabs an axe. A nosy neighbor later calls the police. Tillinghast, having destroyed the Resonator, is arrested for Pretorius’ murder.

He’s admitted for psychiatric treatment. His physician is the controversial rising star Dr. Katherine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton). She’s intrigued by his story. She signs him out into her care. To study the device and publish the findings. They’re met by the lead detective on the Pretorius’ case Bubba Brownlee (Ken Foree).

McMichaels helps Tillinghast rebuild the device. Turning it on causes an altered Pretorius to reenter our dimension. McMichaels, ignoring the obvious dangers, flips the switch again while the others sleep. She’s attacked by Pretorius. Tillinghast is nearly killed by a creature. Brownlee manages to save them both.

The Resonator is somehow activated from the other side. Its frequency now compasses the entire house. Creatures attack Brownlee, McMichaels and Tillinghast. Brownlee dies protecting them. Both return to the hospital. Influenced by his enlarged pineal gland Tillinghast attacks staff. McMichaeals’ haters turn on her. They manage to escape and return to the house.

They plant a bomb to destroy everything. Pretorius goes after her again. Tillinghast pulls him off, they struggle and he dies. She jumps out the window to escape the blast. A crowd gathers outside to help her. But the damage has already has been done. She’s been driven insane.

The good: Combs & Crampton together again. Ken Foree. The scorned Dr. McMichaels getting a taste of her own medicine.

The bad: Tillinghast put in danger and dying because of Drs. Pretorius and McMichaels. The resurrected Pretorius was very disturbing. Creepy special effects. The Resonator’s effects on McMichaels. She wants to continue her research. Despite what happened to her and Tillinghast.

McMichaels studying Tillinghast like a lab rat for his enlarged pineal gland. Dr. Bloch ordering Tillinghast be killed for an immediate autopsy. Tillinghast going off the deep end.

The ugly: McMichaels’ refusal to leave led to Brownlee’s and Tillinghast’s deaths.
